Backpacking Split

Information on Split, sights to see, nightlife, activities and more.

Split was built around the Diocletian palace (1,700 years ago) for retired Roman emperor Diocletian. It is the second-largest city in Croatia and located on the beautiful blue waters of the Adriatic sea. When exploring the historic old town of Split you'll have plenty of vendors, cafes, and restaurants offering freshly made beverages, and local specialties all while being surrounded by Roman walls, squares, and temples. After your journey through Old Town, head towards Riva, the boardwalk along the water, to people-watch and have a view of the ferries and ocean. The city is always buzzing as they have amazing weather almost everyday. After sunset, explore the trendy bars and hit up the clubs or live music scene. Split is one of the three most popular destinations to backpack along the Croatian coast and will be full of people ready to go island hopping, hitting the beach or heading out for a big night. The best months to visit Split are April - September.

Must See

Diocletian’s Palace - This UNESCO protected Roman palace was built in the 4th century. It is very well preserved and a big space to explore. The 4th season of Game of Thrones filmed scenes here.

Bačvice Beach - popular with the locals and a quick walk from the old town.

St. Dominus Cathedral Clock Tower - Best vantage point offering unmatched views of the port and town.

Day Trip Activities

Visit the islands of Hvar, Vis or Brac - The islands near Split are beautiful and easy to visit by ferry for a day trip (although we do recommend staying for at least a night!)

Krka National Park - Full of waterfalls and you can even swim in the crystal clear water. Only an hour and a half from Split.

Nightlife

Split has one of the top nightlife scenes in all of Croatia. The people coming to Split in the summer are coming to party and there is something fun to do every night. The beachfront clubs are open until the morning and you are guaranteed to find a fun mix of backpackers, students, locals and non-locals at most pubs and clubs.
