Santorini is a beautiful island off the coast of Greece and part of the Cyclades island chain in the southern Aegean Sea.  Formed from one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history, it is part of a circular archipelago that were created from years of volcanic eruptions. Famous for its beautiful whitewashed buildings, Santorini was put on the map as one of the worlds most romantic destinations, as well as consistently getting voted the world’s top island. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, don’t miss Santorini. You will definitely enjoy watching the sunset at Oia, visiting historical sites all over the island, or having wine in the vineyards. Recently, traveling to Santorini has become even more popular. Backpackers might want to consider limiting your time here depending on what kind of budget you’re on as it can get expensive. Must See

Visit Akrotiri - Akrotiri is a 3,500-year-old Minoan town preserved by volcanic ash from the explosion of 17th BC and, much like Pompeii, has been spectacularly well preserved by the lava. Streets, buildings, stairs and even second floors of buildings are still in perfect condition. Archaeologists have only excavated a part of the village so far, but the complex is quite large.

Visit the Beaches - All of the beaches are made of volcanic rock & pebbles but this doesn’t stop travelers from visiting all summer. Red Beach is famous for its vivid red volcanic cliff on the bright blue Mediterranean Sea.

 

Must Do

Hike Fira to Oia - Starting in Fira, which is the island’s capital, you’ll pass tourist attractions like the Fira’s main shopping area and the Catholic Cathedral. As you continue on you’ll pass by the Aegean Sea and see its famous volcano before heading into the village of Firostefani. From here you’ll pass the Monastery of Saint Nicholas and into the village of Imerovigli before hiking up the famous Skaros Rock. The trail then heads further north where you’ll find picturesque Oia.

Spend the Day in Oia - This village is the main attraction on Santorini with the whitewashed houses perched on cliffs, blue-domed churches, and windmills you see in all the photos. enjoy a drink or meal right on the caldera’s edge, and stick around for the spectacular sunset.

 

Nightlife

Fira has the most bars and nightlife and the only real dance clubs. Perissa and Kamari have some fun beach bars and the most action especially for establishments right on the water. There are many places on the island for you to enjoy a drink whether you like loud music or chilled vibe, busy or quiet and of course there are plenty of romantic restaurants and spots to get drinks.
