Backpacking Rome

Information on Rome, sights to see, nightlife, activities and more.

The former home to Western civilization and capital of Italy, Rome is a place full of history. Here backpackers can find countless relics of the ancient world alongside many modern attractions. For history lovers, you’ll find few better cities than Rome. There are so many ancient sites to check out, from the Pantheon to the Colosseum and and the Roman Forum. Rome is home to around 1000 churches, including four basilicas, the most famous of which is St Peter’s basilica at the Vatican. Although the Vatican is technically an independent country it’s located in the middle of Rome and a great place to explore when you visit. The Sistine Chapel could be considered a walk-in work of art and art is everywhere in Rome. The Trevi Fountain, probably the most famous fountain in the world, will cause you to be struck with imagination. Rome isn’t all classical art and religious landmarks, however. It’s also home to a world class fashion industry and nightlife scene. Backpackers will love finding Italy’s renowned cuisine on every street: pizzas, pasta dishes, paninis, and gelato. Have a cup of world-class espresso or a glass (or three) of quality Italian wine. A day in Rome will fly by, easily spent exploring the city’s streets, discovering enchanting Piazzas, and ducking in and out of churches, museums, and restaurants. Rome has so much to offer that a single visit may not be enough! Many backpackers fall in love with the city but definitely mind your budget as Rome can get expensive.

Must See

The Colosseum - The Colosseum is nearly 2,000 years old and was the largest amphitheater ever built at this time and in the Roman Empire. It used to hold 50,000 - 80,000 spectators viewing gladiator contests.

The Trevi Fountain - Finished in 1762, the Trevi Fountain is Rome's largest and most famous fountain. It is 85 feet high and 65 feet wide. Remember to throw a coin over your shoulder while you are here so you are blessed with a return trip in your future.

Vatican City - Vatican City is the world’s smallest country so it is very easy to see. Backpackers should take some time to see the home of the Pope, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and all of the great museums located here as well.

The Pantheon - The Pantheon hasn’t changed much since it was constructed around 2,000 years ago. It was first built as a temple before it became a church. As you walk across the marble floors you’ll gain an appreciation for the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built.

The Forum and Palantine Hill - Explore where the government of Ancient Rome was located and where the Caesars ruled their empire. Next to it is Palatine Hill which has many wonderful ruins to explore and where the Roman aristocracy lived.

Must Do

Eat your way through Rome - Pizza, Pasta, Wine, Espresso and Gelato. Bring your appetite and be prepared to eat all the tasty food.

Take a Walking Tour - With so much to see in Rome, taking a tour is a great way to learn more about the history of the city.

Hang at all of the Piazza’s - There are plenty to visit including Piazza Navona which is one of Rome’s most famous squares. Most are decorated with grand fountains and mansions. They’re great place to people watch and grab drinks. The Spanish Steps are located at the Piazza di Spagna.

View Rome from Gianicolo Hill - Situated behind the Trastevere neighborhood, Gianicolo Hill is the second-tallest hill in the city and gives you views of just about every major sight in Rome. It’s an excellent place to watch the sunset and then head down the hill for dinner in the Trastevere.

Nightlife

Once night falls you’ll want to be in the Trastevere neighborhood this is where many of the city’s best restaurants, and bars are located. Many of the locals will be drinking on the streets and bridges, around Viccolo de Cinque Street in Trastevere, lively on the weekend, and fun will be had. Another great choice for nightlife in Rome is Monti. We recommend heading to the main piazza with a couple bottles of wine and joining the crowd sitting around the fountain enjoying the summer nights. There is also the San Lorenzo neighborhood which is a cheap area popular with the student population. Wherever you end up a night out in Rome is always a blast!
