Prague is without a doubt a place that should be on your radar, as Prague is one of the most beautiful cities not just in Europe, but in the world. The capital city of the Czech Republic, Prague has so much to offer a backpacker visiting the city on a budget. Renowned for its history, architecture, food, nightlife and the fact that its beer is often cheaper than water, Prague is a great stop on your backpacking adventure. Prague has been a political and cultural center of Europe for centuries. In previous lifetimes, it was the capital of Bohemia, a residence of Holy Roman Emperors, an important city during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the capital of Czechoslovakia. Prague just feels magical, and the serenity of the city will have you feeling as if you have time traveled back to medieval times. The city was relatively untouched in World War II so the historic center of Prague remained intact, and it made the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1992. The castles, cathedrals, & bridges on the Vltava River are sure to have you falling in love with the historical capital of the Czech Republic.

Prague Castle - Dating back to 880, Prague Castle has been growing in size, beauty, and fame. It’s the largest castle in the world with almost 70,000 square meters, and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. There is so much history, stunning architecture and arts to admire in Prague Castle that one you could spend half the day there.

Charles Bridge - The Charles Bridge is a historic bridge across the Vltava river. Its construction started in 1357 and finished in the beginning of the 15th century. As the only means of crossing the river until 1841, the Charles Bridge was the most important connection between Prague Castle and the city's Old Town.

Old Town Square - Staroměstské náměstí or known as Old Town Square is the most significant square in Prague. You can find the Old Town Hall and its famous astronomical clock here. Along with various monuments and structures such. Aside from the historical significance of Old Town Square, the Gothic architecture is a sight to behold. Something that takes Prague apart from the rest of Europe.

 

Must Do

Enjoy Czech Cuisine - Czech food is amazingly good and you won’t have the opportunity to eat it much back home. Be sure to try classic dishes such as roasted pork with dumplings and cabbage, goulash, fried cheese, and a wide variety of sausages.

Drink Beer - The Czech city of Pilsen is where world famous pilsner beer originated from in 1842. Pilsner Urquell is the world’s 1st blond lager, and it is still produced here in droves today. You’ll literally see the large tanks filled with the liquid gold everywhere. The Czech people drink the most beer per person in the world so the beer has to be good.

Prague boasts one of the best drinking scenes in Europe.
