Backpacking Nice

Information on Nice, sights to see, nightlife, activities and more.

With its mix of real-city grit, old-world opulence, year-round sunshine, vibrant street life and stunning seaside location, no place in France compares with Nice. Nice became a tourist magnet as early as the 1700s. Look around and you’ll find the same elemental attractions that drew Europe's aristocrats to promenade along the waterfront in horse-drawn carriages. Even now, nothing compares to the joy of a hot beach day with a spot of people-watching astride the Promenade des Anglais' famous blue chairs. Whether you're swimming, sprawled on a beach lounger or transfixed by sunset over the ever-present Med, it's all still going on at the water. For any lover of French and Italian culture, Nice is the perfect hybrid. Nice only joined France in 1860 and and the Italian influence remains noticeable everywhere, from fresh pasta shops on every corner and even in the football cheer Issa Nissa!  Definitely bring your appetite when you come to Nice.

Must See

Promenade Des Anglais - This is the main street of the city in front of the ocean. Vendors sell fresh-made crepes and, best of all, there are tons of restaurants on the beach.

Vieux Nice - Below the hill of the main city, Nice’s 16th century Old Town is a maze of streets and tight alleyways. There are many boutiques, markets, crêperies, and cafés. It is primarily a pedestrian-only part of town that’s lively so expect a bit of noise as people enjoy these narrow winding streets.

Nice Port - The port is lively and has plenty of hip bars, restaurants, and nightlife. This area doesn’t attract a ton of tourists so it’s a nice spot if you want to get a more local feel of Nice.

Must Do

Day Trip to Monaco - only 30-40 minutes away from Nice on the train. Walking around Monaco and Monte Carlo will keep you occupied for a number of hours. Spend your day exploring the casinos, yachts, and fancy restaurants that line the water.

If you want to see exactly how the local royal family, the Grimaldis, live then you must visit Prince’s Palace built in 1191. Situated on the top of a hill, getting to the palace can be tiring but the view from the top makes it worth it.

Nightlife

You’ll be able to find nightlife almost anywhere you go in Nice. The city center, Nice Port or Promenade Des Anglais are where you can expect to find fun bars and clubs. Nightlife in this region, especially during the summer season, is in abundance and offers options for all types of after dark enthusiast. There are true A-list clubs which attract the city's social set and don't get going until nearly midnight or bars which have a mix of dancing and seating and a great local vibe.
