Backpacking Ljubljana

Information on Ljubljana, sights to see, nightlife, activities and more.

They say the best things come in small packages. Ljubljana is one of Europe's smallest capitals, but it's the biggest city in Slovenia. Its size is an asset, though, lending it a delicate and elegant charm that more populated cities couldn't hope to replicate. Ljubljana is home to an impressive assortment of beautiful architecture. Widely considered one of Europe's greenest cities, it's home to several leafy parks and open spaces. The Tromostovje, or Triple Bridge, arches across the river to join the city's modern area with the Old Town. The latter is home to many restaurants and cafes. The dining is top-notch here, and many local specialties can be had for those who know how to navigate the labyrinth of winding streets. Above the city, on one of two hills, is Ljubljana's castle, which offers scenic views of the town. Destroyed by an earthquake several centuries ago, it makes for an interesting exploration point. For all its quaintness and charm, Ljubljana is not a boring place. Nowhere is this more evident than in Metelkova City, an old military barracks which is now a cultural meeting point and autonomous social center. Currently squatted by groups like activists and students, it's home to exhibitions, performances, and other activities. There is also a wealth of museums and galleries in Ljubljana, and cultural treasures like Dragon Bridge and the city's Cathedral. A day here can easily be filled just walking or cycling around while enjoying the airy, fresh atmosphere and gazing at the sights.

Must See

Ljubljana Old Town - Since the majority of Ljubljana is pedestrianized, you can enjoy a slow-paced wander through its narrow streets, marveling at its baroque facades and picturesque bridges spanning the river. Take a walking tour or make sure to visit the city's main highlights, including Tivoli Park, Dragon Bridge, and Ljubljana Cathedral. In addition to historical monuments and medieval architecture, the Old Town area boasts plenty of dining options, including restaurants, cafes, and street markets selling fresh produce.

Triple Bridge - Linking the old with the new, Triple Bridge refers to the three adjacent bridges spanning the Ljubljanica River from medieval Old Town to the modern district. The city's most photographed landmark, these three arched bridges are perhaps even more beautiful when lit up at night. Enjoy a relaxing wander through Ljubljana's narrow streets, marveling at its baroque facades and leafy neighborhoods while criss-crossing the bridges.

Lake Bled - With its dark turquoise waters Lake Bled is every traveler's dream destination. Framed by the magnificent Alps, this natural oasis is one of Slovenia's biggest attractions, luring in visitors with its romantic setting. Visit Lake Bled's medieval castle that sits high above the lake, clinging to the rocky cliff, or experience the serenity of the lake as you glide across it to an island in a traditional wooden boat. If you want you can row to the island on your own, and then visit its 15th-Century church, making your way to the upper roof beams to ring the "wishing-bell", for it is said that ringing the bell three times will make your dreams come true.
