Backpacking Dubrovnik

Information on Dubrovnik, sights to see, nightlife, activities and more.

Dubrovnik is one of the major highlights in all of Croatia. Dubrovnik’s Old Town was the filming location for King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, and its surrounding beaches are some of the best in the whole Adriatic sea. Due to this Dubrovnik has become an extremely popular destination for tourists over the course of the last decade or so. Dubrovnik was established as a maritime trading hub more than a thousand years ago, and over the centuries, it has changed hands multiple times. Recent history includes up to the Balkan Wars where Dubrovnik was heavily damaged during Siege of Dubrovnik in ’91 and ’92 when it was heavily shelled by the Yugoslav army. While walking the city walls and streets of Dubrovnik, it is worth remembering how recently this region was engulfed in war. Nevertheless, Dubrovnik is full of stunning beauty, impressive architecture, and stunning blue sea waters and we are sure you will be impressed with a stopover here.

Must See

Explore the Old Town & Fortress - Dubrovnik is an incredibly well-preserved old medieval port town. Just walking around the city and marveling at the towering buildings and walls is a lovely experience. It is easy to get lost in the back streets of Dubrovnik, away from the tourists and souvenir shops, and feel instantly transported back in time.

Walk the City Walls - It is possible to walk the tops of the city walls themselves. The Old Town walls that encircle the entire city are very impressive and you will feel like you are walking around the walls of Kings Landing looking upon Blackwater Bay.

Must Do

Game of Thrones Tour - Dubrovnik was used as the backdrop for King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. If you are a fan of the show you would love a tour. We can provide you with a self guided tour if you’d like to save the money!

Lokrum Island - is conveniently located on a short ferry ride from Dubrovnik Old Town, so day trips to the island are very popular. Spending a day or just a half-day there can be a really refreshing experience, as the island has plenty of pine, cypress and olive trees as well as some other subtropical vegetation which offers quiet and shade, during the hot summer days.

Nightlife

If you like to party, Dubrovnik is fast becoming a worthwhile place to stop in and have a night out in Croatia. Summer beach parties feature banging club music, dancing, and a whole lot of booze, as is standard practice in Croatia. In addition, Hanging out at some of the bars in Old Town surrounded by the walls is definitely part of the experience in Dubrovnik.
