Backpacking Crete

Information on Crete, sights to see, nightlife, activities and more.

Crete is one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. From the sun-drenched beaches in the north to the rugged canyons spilling out at the cove and cliff-lined southern coast. Crete is full of valleys with small villages, and round hills where you can trek through Europe’s longest gorge, hike to the cave where Zeus was born or cycle among orchards. On the coast you can walk on the sandy beaches, boat, kayak or snorkel in the clear blue waters. Crete’s natural beauty is equaled only by the richness of its history. The island is the birthplace of the first advanced society on European soil, the Minoans, who ruled some 4000 years ago. This is an island that almost feels like a country on its own. It’s small enough to have a care-free island vibe but large enough to have its own fascinating culture. Crete is ancient and wonderful with its historic landmarks, dazzling landscapes, and beautiful beaches. The traditional Mediterranean villages on the island are charming and the food in Crete is amazing. Backpackers will find many enjoyable spots to check out on the island of Crete!

Must See

Visit Chania Town - The second largest city in Crete, Chania Town has a Venetian quarter and harbor front lined with restaurants, cafes, and shops. Chania, while being one of the most magnificent old towns in Greece, is also home to beautiful beaches and gorges to explore. While here, check out the historic Firka Fortress.

Visit Knossos Palace - Knossos was the ancient capital of the Minoan empire, and its ruins are some of the oldest in Greece. This palace complex is wonderfully preserved, you’ll be able to roam the courtyards, private apartments, baths, and more with the original mural paintings still in good condition.

Must Do

Hike Samaria Gorge - The most famous hiking gorge in Europe is located at the National Reserve of Lefka Ori, where you can descend the Samaria Gorge. The length of the gorge reaches 18km’s and takes 4-7 hours to hike from the plateau of Omalos to the beach at Agia Roumeli, depending on your walking speed. Be sure to grab a beer and hang out at one of the seaside tavernas once you reach the beach.

Hang out on Elafonissi Beach - This beach is considered one of the the most beautiful beach in Greece due to its pinkish sand and clear Mediterranean water. Across from the mainland there is an abandoned island where you can explore a lighthouse and chruch. Beach chairs and umbrellas are not permitted here so you’ll find whole stretches of beach and sheltered coves all to yourself.

Nightlife

Crete's nightlife does not disappoint and offers something for everyone. The island has earned the reputation of being one of the best Greek islands to party on. The seaside resorts of Malia and Hersonissos are a favorite among backpackers who want to dance at night clubs with DJs playing music until early morning. In the city of Chania you can find bars and clubs hidden in the picturesque alleys of the old city and others overlooking the harbor. In the city of Rethymno there is a good variety of bars, clubs, taverns and restaurants.
