Backpacking Cologne

Information on Cologne, sights to see, nightlife, activities and more.

Cologne is Germany’s fourth-largest city, and it’s located on the Rhine river. The impressive Cologne Cathedral towers above the city and climbing its 500+ steps to the top offers amazing views of the city. At first glance, Cologne may not seem like the ideal destination for a backpacking trip but behind the Gothic buildings and traffic-heavy, urban sprawl is an interesting city. One that is characterful, artsy and unique. With over 2,000 years of history – from its days as a Roman settlement to its current status as a university city and cultural capital – there is more than enough to keep most tourists happy. From Romanesque churches, ancient ruins and medieval history, Cologne is a unique, open-minded city that is both effortlessly hip and full of culture. Unless you have a lot of time or friends to see, we recommend only a day or two in Cologne as a backpacker.

Must See

Visit the Kolner Dom - Cologne Cathedral is one of Germany’s most famous landmarks and a beautiful example of gothic architecture. The cathedral took over 600 years to be build and was considered one of the tallest buildings in the world until 1884.

Walk the Rhine Promenade - The mighty Rhine is one of the city’s defining characteristic, sweeping through the city and cutting it in two.

Explore Old Town - Wandering around Colognes wonderfully preserved and restored streets evokes a wonderfully medieval atmosphere.

Must Do

Take a River Cruise - Cruises up and down the Rhine are very popular. You can take a day tour or join a multi-day trip through other parts of Germany.

Drink Kölsch in a Brauhaus - No visit to Cologne is complete without trying a nice cold Kölsch, which is a type of beer originating here. Make sure to try it at a Brauhaus which is a traditional German pub where the beer is brewed.

Nightlife

There are tons of bars, lounges, and clubs throughout Cologne. Live music can be found all over the city, including jazz, reggae, and techno. The Belgian Quarter, or Belgisches Viertel, has become a prime spot for young people, backpackers, and nightlife. During the summer, beer gardens pop out and fill up the outdoor space.
