Backpacking Budapest

Information on Budapest, sights to see, nightlife, activities and more.

Situated in the heart of Europe, Budapest is the capital of Hungary, and referred to as 'The Pearl of the Danube,' for its fixating beauty. Formerly two separate cities, Buda and Pest were forged into one by time, occupation, and the eight bridges that connect them together today. The city's beauty has been pieced together by its many conquerors, each one leaving its influence on Budapest and the Hungarian people. The city appeals to many: You can step out of a thermal bath and right into a nightclub. Budapest is blessed with an abundance of hot springs. As a result, the thermal baths have been an experience here since the time of the Romans. The amount of bathhouses are generous and available all over the city in may different styles including ancient Roman ruins or modern built spas. Either way most people that use them are there for fun and relaxation or to cure a hangover. In a city that dates back to the Old Stone Age, visiting history buffs can take their pick between Roman, neo-Gothic, Renaissance and Ottoman architecture. Budapest is more than just the political capital of Hungary – it's also the commercial and cultural hub. Budapest meshes modern conveniences with ancient architecture and grassy parks. Whether you're searching for cuisine, shopping, or museums, a multitude of all await you in Budapest. Best of all Budapest has arguably the top nightlife for backpackers in all of Eastern and Central Europe with some of the lowest prices as well!

Must See

Hungarian Parliament - As Europe's largest Parliament building, the Hungarian Parliament is also Budapest's most iconic sight. On the shore of the Danube river, the neo-Gothic building is characterized by its massive light-maroon dome, which symbolizes Hungary's millennial celebration in 1896.

Gellert Hill & Baths - Located high above the city, Gellert Hill has one of the best viewpoints in Budapest. For the adventurous backpacker, a rigorous walk to the top is rewarded with a breathtaking view of Buda Castle, the Chain Bridge, and St. Stephen's Basilica. After the hike, be sure to relax in the Gellert Thermal Baths.

Must Do

Visit the Baths - The neo-Baroque style Széchenyi Thermal Baths are one of Budapest's most unique and popular attractions. The complex is the largest bath in Europe, complete with saunas, steam rooms, massage parlors, and private cabins. In the colder months, you'll be able to enjoy being outside from the heated outdoor pools. On Saturdays in the summer the Széchenyi baths throw wild parties!

Try the Local Food & Drink - While backpacking Budapest, you’ve got to eat the local cuisine and drink the local booze. Must-try dishes include goulash, chicken paprikash, and langos– a deep-fried bread topped with cheese and sour cream. In terms of Alcohol - Hungarians love their pálinka. This traditional fruit brandy comes in many different flavors, which all taste like firewater. Be prepared to take shots of this at the bars.

Check out the Great Market Hall - Built in the late 1800’s, this market is the largest and one of the oldest in Budapest. Mostly destroyed during World War II, it remained that way until the 90’s when it was restored. The market has three floors of stalls selling fresh fruits and vegetables, cheeses, sausages, spices, and local crafts. There is a food court inside the market on the second floor where you can try local Hungarian food.

Nightlife

Mention Budapest to backpackers, and the first thing you’ll hear about are the city’s awesome ruin bars; formerly abandoned buildings that have been converted into low key clubs with little more than unwanted furniture and some creativity. These unique bars are now a major attraction in Budapest, with some of them now frequented more by travelers than locals. These bars are tons of fun and the parties go all night. Budapest is definitely the best of the best for a night out in Europe. If you’re looking to party during the day or evening then we recommend a booze cruise on the Danube river. The boats will have a DJ and most people treat it as the pre-party before the party.
