Belgrade is the biggest city in Serbia and one of the few capitals that’s built on the intersection of two rivers in the Balkans, in this case the Danube and Sava rivers. This city has a long and complicated history being the old capital of Yugoslavia. Nowadays, Belgrade is one of the most urban cities of Eastern Europe and it attracts thousands of backpackers each year for its amazing nightlife, mixture of modern and old architecture, rich cuisine and having welcoming locals. One of Europe’s oldest cities, Belgrade has proven itself to be resilient throughout the centuries. Its chaotic past presents itself through different styles of buildings, from the socialist blocks to the early 1900’s structures, from Viennese influence to Ottoman remnants. Today, the city’s historical monuments and relics, including the Belgrade Fortress, are peppered throughout the city center and have become favorite hangout spots even for locals. Known as one of Eastern Europe’s most vibrant cities, Belgrade has become a capital of nightlife for young people. The most popular places to go out are splavs (floating river clubs), and kafanas (traditional Serbian taverns) and there’s a lot to do after the sun goes down. Must See

Belgrade Fortress & Military Museum - The monumental Belgrade Fortress is the main landmark of the city. Standing tall above the adjoining point of rivers Danube and Sava, this fortress was built, destroyed, and rebuilt several times between the 2nd and 18th centuries. The Military Museum, officially established in 1956, lies within the fortress and chronicles the complete military history of what was once Yugoslavia.

Republic Square - Republic Square has been Belgrade’s main square since 1866. Today, Republic Square is the central hangout and point of orientation for locals and visitors alike. Surrounded by historic monuments and cultural buildings, there is a lot to see here.

Must Do

Walk Down Knez Mihailova Street - The main pedestrian and shopping zone in Belgrade, and protected by law as one of the oldest and most valuable landmarks of the city. Named after Mihailo Obrenović III, Prince of Serbia, it features a number of buildings and mansions built during the late 1870s. Here you will find coffee houses in historical buildings and gritty dive bars.

Hang on Skadarlija Street - Skadarlija street partially preserved the ambiance of the traditional urban architecture, including its archaic urban organization, and is known as the main bohemian quarter of Belgrade. Here you can try the best traditional Serbian food and drink.

Nightlife

Belgrade is famous for its nightlife and party culture as well as alcohol consumption is common here. During the summer, clubs operate out of barges anchored on the banks of the Danube river. The barges have been converted into nightclubs and there are dozens to choose from all offering different types of music as well as being open until sunrise. There are also clubs in the city center and pub crawls for backpackers are common and a great way to explore the nightlife in Belgrade.
