Backpacking Belfast

Information on Belfast, sights to see, nightlife, activities and more.

The island’s other capital city, Belfast, is very different to Dublin. It’s a much younger city and is more rugged architecturally. However, it’s emerged from its tumultuous past to become a great backpacking destination and has somewhat of a unique feel in places due to its past. Belfast is probably best known for being where the Titanic was built as well as for the violence here during The Troubles in the 20th century. Today the city offers a bustling city center, the famous Titanic Quarter, fun pubs, excellent museums, hundreds of street murals, beautiful gardens and green spaces. It’s also cheaper for going out than in a lot of cities in Ireland, with a great bar and restaurant scene. The food is great - Fresh produce from nearby farms and seafood from local ports is cooked into delicious dishes in the kitchens. From high-end seasonal tasting menus to innovative fusion cooking, creativity is everywhere. Craft brewers and gin distillers in and around the city contribute to an ever growing menu of specialty local beverages as well. Belfast has pulled off a remarkable transformation into a hip party town and we think is a great fun for backpackers.

Must See

The Titanic Quarter - Built on the shipyard where the Titanic was constructed over 100 years ago, Titanic Belfast is quite an experience. In the museum, you’ll find nine galleries spread across six floors mirroring the height of Titanic, as well as interactive exhibitions and an underwater movie theater. This is the whole story, from dream to tragedy and takes around 3 hours.

St George’s Market - For an authentic taste of Belfast check out the market on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. More than 150 traders set up stalls laden with just about anything but the best part is the Incredible seafood, fresh crusty bread, Broughgammon Farm’s goat meat: whatever your tastes, St. George’s Market will provide.

Must Do

Game of Thrones Tour - If you are a fan you can see some of the most photographed sights in Northern Ireland on a scenic tour from Belfast, and discover Game of Thrones location sites along the way. Visit the famous Dark Hedges, pass Dunluce Castle, discover Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge and the Giant’s Causeway.

Walk the Botanic Gardens - The gardens were established in 1828 and opened to the public in 1900. The ancient gardens are stunning and make for the perfect place to go for a stroll.
